The introduction of compulsory helmet laws marked a major milestone in motorcycle safety. Studies conducted over the following decades consistently showed that helmets dramatically reduce the risk of head injuries and death in motorcycle crashes. Today, wearing an approved motorcycle helmet is second nature for Australian riders, but in the early 1970s it was considered a groundbreaking step forward.

Supporters of lane filtering argue that it can help reduce traffic congestion, improve traffic flow and lower the risk of rear-end collisions involving motorcycles. While the rules vary between jurisdictions, Australia remains one of the few places where regulated lane filtering is widely permitted.
