Forward field of view and protrusions

Strict rules apply to vehicle modifications that pose a risk to a driver’s forward field of view and the safety of vulnerable road users.

Light vehicles must not be fitted with protruding engine or fuel system components, or externally mounted gauges that restrict a driver’s forward field of view, or that do not minimise the likelihood of injury to vulnerable road users (i.e. pedestrians and bicycle riders) making contact with the vehicle.

Suitable bonnet scoops or guards can be used to cover those engine components and gauges if they do not obstruct the driver’s forward field of view and are not protrusions.

The current vehicle standards reflecting those requirements are made under the
Road Transport (Vehicle Registration) Regulation 2017 and in AIS Rule 105.
